Malia features a performance by Joe Browne - one of London’s best kept jazz secrets. His soaring soprano solo hangs over a backdrop inspired by the systems music of Steve Reich. Here a simple melody line is ‘phased’ by adding and removing notes until a pulsing texture is created. The song features some of my favourite ‘wrong’ clashing harmony in the accompaniment where the melody is subtly at odds with the chords. Balagan right? (That’s my excuse I’m sticking to it.)
